On Ukrainian Independence Day last year, Chernihiv resident Artem Turyanytsia came home after spending three and a half years as a Russian prisoner of war. Following his release, he resumed leadership of the Chernihiv Oblast Powerlifting Federation, which he heads, and organised the federation's first tournament. According to Turyanytsia, powerlifting developed rapidly worldwide during the years he was absent, while the sport in Ukraine currently needs additional support and promotion. He expressed a firm intention to work actively on popularising powerlifting across Chernihiv Oblast. Turyanytsia spoke about the significance of the tournament and the prospects for powerlifting development in the region in a broadcast on Ukrainian Radio Chernihiv.
